The general procedure for setting up an ADSL router is as follows.
With the Computer and the router switched off
Connect the Power cable to the router.
Connected the ADSL cable in to the Router and the Microfilter. The size of the plug on this cable (RJ11) should make identifying the correct sockets very easy. But look for DSL or ADSL near the sockets.
Unplug everything you have plugged into the B.T. phone socket and place the microfilter directly in to the B.T. phone socket , at this stage only plug your landline phone into the remaining socket of the micro filter . If you have any phone socket extension around the premises please unplug all other phones , sky boxes, fax machines etc until you have managed to confirm your ADSL connection works correctly.
Plug the network/ethernet cable into the router and the computer.
Switch on the router , allow a few minutes for the router to sort itself out .
Switch on the computer.
Once the computer has finished loading up If you are running Windows XP or 2000 as the operating system then GO to the windows START button and select RUN, type CMD press Enter. With Windows Vista select the start Button and type run in the search area. select run from the results and then continue as above i.e. type CMD press Enter.
In the screen that appears type ipconfig/all and press enter, this should provide you with the following information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Windows IP Configuration
Host Name .......................: THIS IS WHATEVER YOUR COMPUTER IS CALLED IN "MY COMPUTER" AREA Primary Dns Suffix............: Node type........................: Unknown | IP Routing Enabled...........: No | These 4 lines will look like this by default WINS Proxy Enabled........: No |
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specfic DNS Suffix: Description............................: This will be the name/type of the network card Physical Address...................: This is the MAC address ( not to be confused with a Migration access code)of the network card Dhcp enabled.........................: The answer here is Yes or No, should be Yes by default IP Address.............................: An Example would be 192.168.1.2 Subnet Mask..........................: An Example would be 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway.........................: If the router Dhcp above is set to YES then this will be the IP address of the router DNS Servers..........................:If the router Dhcp above is set to YES then this will be the IP address of the router --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If , as it says next to the Dhcp enabled line above, your computer is set to Dhcp Yes, then the IPaddress given under Default Gateway, an example would be 192.168.1.1 and your computer IPaddress will be something close to this , as above 192.168.1.2.
With this information still open please now open Internet Explorer, if you have been on a dial up connection before this, it will probably prompt you to connect with the dial up box. If this is the case select Work Offline.
Then from Internet explorers menu select TOOLS -> INTERNET OPTIONS ->from the tabs at the top CONNECTIONS, half way down you will see it says ,ALWAYS DIAL MY DEFAULT CONNECTION, change this to NEVER DIAL A CONNECTION Click APPLY then OK.
Then Internet explorers menu, click on FILE, from the drop down menu you will see it will have a tick by WORK OFFLINE, simply click on this to remove the tick.
Still Internet explorer click on View -> from the drop down menu select Toolbars then make sure there is a tick by ADDRESS BAR. If there isn't a tick please click on Address bar to place a tick there.
Still in internet explorer. In the ADDRESS BAR type http://PLEASE THEN TYPE THE GATEWAY NUMBERS IN HERE so from our example it would look like http://192.168.1.1 and press enter or go and you should now see the welcome screen of your router.
You now need to log into your router with the default username and password THE ROUTER MANUFACTURER will have written in the Router user Manual. Once in please follow their instructions on where to put you Naims adsl username e.g. yourusername@adsllogin.co.uk or @adsl.enta.net and your Naims password, also check that the default settings for the router are as follows , if not please change them.
